National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) was established in 1975 by the Government of India with the prime objective of improving the quality of Medical Education by establishing high and uniform standards of postgraduate examinations in modern medicine on All India basis. NBEMS conducts postgraduate and post-doctoral examinations in approved disciplines leading to the award of Diplomate of National Board (DNB) and Fellow of National Board (FNB). The setting up of a National Body to conduct postgraduate medical examination and training has provided common standards and mechanism of evaluation of minimum level of desired knowledge and competencies and fulfillment of the objectives for which postgraduate courses has been started in medical institutions. Moreover, intra country and international comparison is facilitated with the availability of commonly accepted evaluation mechanism like the DNB. The DNB final examinations are conducted on all India basis on standardized format and multiple assessment tools are used for assessing the candidates knowledge skills and competencies.

NBEMS administers Post Graduate, Doctoral and Post Doctoral level Programmes in various disciplines of modern medicine. Post Graduate courses are offered to Post MBBS and Post Diploma candidates leading to the award of Diplomate of National Board (DNB) qualifications.

RECOGNITION OF DNB & FNB QUALIFICATION

The nomenclature of the qualification awarded by the National Board of Examinations is "Diplomate of National Board" (DNB), DrNB & "Fellow of National Board" (FNB) / NBEMS Diploma Courses. These recognized qualifications awarded by NBEMS in various Broad Specialties, Super specialties and Sub Specialties are approved by the Government of India and included in the First Schedule of IMC Act 1956.

The holders of NBEMS qualification awarded after an examination i.e. DNB/DrNB are eligible to be considered for specialist post/faculty in any hospital including training/teaching institute on a teaching post as faculty members.

Further, an Independent Certification Body, BSCIC, carried out the Certification Process in two stages: Stage-1 (Desktop Audit) and Stage-2 (Witness Audit). Based on the demonstration of the Quality Management System by NBEMS, the audit team recommended NBEMS for ISO 9001:2015 Certification.

Accordingly, on 9th January 2023, NBEMS has been conferred with the ISO 9001:2015 certificate. In a ceremony held today, the ISO 9001:2015 Certificate was presented to the President NBEMS, Dr. Abhijat Sheth, in presence of Vice Presidents of NBEMS Dr. Nikhil Tandon, Dr. Minu Bajpai, Dr. Shiva Kant Misra & Dr. C. Malikarjuna; Governing Body members Dr. S. N. Basu & Dr. Rakesh Sharma; the CEO (In-Charge) of NBQP, QCI Dr. A. Raj; Dy Director, NBQP, QCI, Sh. Amit Singh and Officers of NBEMS.
